Why Cremation is a Popular Option
Cremation is a popular choice due to environmental concerns, religious tradition, and affordability. Some of the costs associated with funerals are a result of preparing the deceased for public or private viewing through a process known as embalming, which preserves the condition of the deceased. When direct cremation is chosen, meaning the deceased will not be available for viewing, embalming is unnecessary, thereby allowing for reduced costs.
Some families choose cremation in response to environmental concerns. With cremation, resources used in traditional burials and green space are preserved. It is possible to elect for cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a viewing. When this is chosen, the deceased will be embalmed prior to the service and then cremated after the service is complete. When direct cremation is chosen, there are number of service options available, including a memorial service at graveside or a ceremonial garden, or a committal or scattering ceremony where the cremated remains may be interred or scattered in a location that was special to the deceased. There is no requirement to have any services if this is the wish of the deceased or the deceased’s family. Family members can choose to retain some or all of the cremated remains in an urn charged to their safekeeping.
